Your fishing holiday to New Zealand would not be complete without enjoying some of the best game and saltwater fishing in the world. The clear unpolluted waters of New Zealand's Bay of Islands, coupled with the low level of commercial fishing, has the result of offering tremendously diverse and bountiful sport fishing for the angler.

The best Game Fishing for Marlin, Tuna and Shark is between December and May, while salt water fly and light tackle fishing is good year round for Trevally, Yellowtail, Kingfish, Kahawai (sea trout), Grouper, Snapper and John Dory.

In New Zealand there is no requirement for a license for recreational salt water fishing, although daily limits and minimum sizes do apply.

New Zealand fishing can be divided into two distinct categories:

  • Inshore Fisheries - Traditional inshore fishing is based on about 30 main species. Their habitat extends from the shore out to depths of about 200 metres (650 feet), at the edge of the continental shelf. The common inshore species  in the Bay of Islands include snapper, grouper, kingfish, kahawai and trevally.
  • Deep Water Fisheries - Traditional deep water sports fishing occurs  between depths ranging from 200-1500 metres, where the  main concentration of deep water species in New Zealand's waters are found. Several species migrate south to feed in the warm waters of the Bay of Islands' each year, mainly in summer and autumn. These include billfish such as marlin (striped, blue and black) and various tuna species. The various species  migration times are very much dependent on water temperature.

If you are planning a New Zealand fishing holiday in the Bay of Islands and need our advice on the best times to come, where to stay or any other local information please don't hesitate to contact us. If you want to talk fishing, we can do that all day.
